In networking, switching refers to the process of forwarding data packets from one network device to another. A switch is a network device that connects network segments together and operates at the data link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model.

When a switch receives a data packet from one device on a particular port, it reads the destination MAC address in the packet header and looks up its forwarding table to determine which port to forward the packet to. The forwarding table contains the MAC addresses and associated ports of devices connected to the switch.

Switching is used in local area networks (LANs) to enable efficient communication between devices. By forwarding data packets only to the devices that need them, switches help reduce network congestion and improve network performance.
