Steps to follow when connecting Nokia E51 as a modem for connecting to the Internet:
Hand set (Mobile) Nokia E51
Laptop: XP Home
Connection User: USB port
Steps:
1. Install Office suit on your laptop or desk top. The office suit ships with the mobile when you purchase it.
2. Reboot your computer when prompted
3. Click on "Connect your PC to Internet using your phone" icon in Nokia PC Suite
4. You will see "One touch access" window pop up.
5. Click on Settings
  a. Choose Nokia E51 USB Modem # .. and click next.
  b. Under Select Network Operator, choose the operator from the drop down box (in our case it is Airtel India. There are two icons for this. Choose first one.)
  c. Under "Configure the connection manually" screen, just enter the accesport as airtelgprs.com
  d. Click finish.

Note:
In the mobile you will be prompted to select "PC Suit" or "Trasmission" mode (or some thing like that). Choose the PC Suite mode.

Now you should be able to connect to the mobile phone using your laptop.

Troubleshooting:
If you are not able to connect, long press '0' on your mobile and see if google.com opens in the mobile browser. This will ensure that the mobile is set for Internet access.

Also, ensure that you followed the instructions in the SMS that was sent by the airtel people. Basically, you need to select "Save" from "Option" when you receive setting from your Service Provider.

Hope this helps.

The procedure is same for WIndows 2000 also.
In the mobile, you need to setup the access point as below:
Tools - Settings - Connection - Packet data - Access Point - airtelgprs.com

Toll free number to Airtel GPRS: 12118
