The increase in paid clicks is primarily a result of recent updates to Google algorithm that is resulting in less number of clicks on organic searches and getting more clicks on paid searches.

As per the "comScore Explicit Core Search Query Report", the following are the changes in Google search volumes (month-on-month for US):

Sept '13: -2%
Aug '13:-2%
July '13: 1%
June '13: -4%
May '13: 0%
April '13: -2%
March '13: 11%
Feb. '13 -6%
Jan '13: 11%
Dec'12: 4%
Nov. '12:-4%
OCt '12: 8%
Sept'12:-4%

Total increase in Core search: 11% over the past one year, whereas the paid clicks have increased by 26%.

As per the article, click cost has reduced by 8% YoY. Therefore, we may need to add another 8% (to 26%), making increase in paid clicks close to 34% YoY.

Looking forward to hear from other webmasters.

It could be reasonably assumed that paid search results are being found more relevant than organic search results.

Any comments?
