Sitemaps are preferred by several search engines including Google, Bing, yandex, and other. Given below are a few resources that generate sitemaps in various formats:
https://xmlsitemapgenerator.org (free)
https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ (available in both free and paid versions) free version only up to 500 pages.

What you need to do with sitemaps before you submit to search engines?
1. Identify the URLs that are canonical (a term used to identify the source url). There may be several urls that point to the same content. Identify the mother url so that when google encounters another url for the same page in the website, it would redirect it to the mother url.
2. Identify image urls and provide attributes to the image as required. It helps in making your images searchable by google and others
3. Point number 2 applies for video content also.
4. If your site has pages in more than one language, use hreflang to tell the search engines that the page is available in other languages.
5. use 301 redirect for www and non-www version of the website. Tell search engine which one you like the site to be treated as. Say www.mysite.com or mysite.com.

There are two different ways to make your sitemap available to Google:

Submit it to Google using the Search Console Sitemaps tool
    OR
Insert the following line anywhere in your robots.txt file, specifying the path to your sitemap:
    Sitemap: http://example.com/sitemap_location.xml

The second method ensures that all search engines can get to your sitemap.

Google Says:
Build and submit a sitemap:

Decide which pages on your site should be crawled by Google, and determine the canonical version of each page.
Decide which sitemap format you want to use. You can create your sitemap manually or choose from a number of third-party tools to generate your sitemap for you.
Test your sitemap using the Search Console Sitemaps testing tool.
Make your sitemap available to Google by adding it to your robots.txt file and submitting it to Search Console.
